    WHAT IS AIOLI?

Aioli is very similar to mayonnaise. Both are made of raw eggs emulsified with oil and an acid. Mayonnaise usually sues vinegar as the acid, while aioli uses lemon juice. Aioli also contains garlic.

My point is, they are very similar in how they are made, creamy, and rich. In fact, it is common practice to use store-bought mayo as the base ingredient of your aioli recipe, making them full of calories and fats. But, what if you don't like mayonnaise? Or, what if you're looking for a healthier alternative to mayonnaise?

    LOW-FAT, HIGH-PROTEIN AIOLI

The sriracha aioli recipe we're making today uses low-fat plain greek yogurt instead of mayonnaise. Creamy, tangy yogurt is paired with garlicky, spicy sriracha sauce forming a low-fat, high protein, oil-free aioli.

    WHAT IS SRIRACHA SAUCE?

Sriracha is a fermented Thai hot sauce made with red chili peppers, sugar, salt, vinegar, and garlic. It has a garlicky, tangy-sweet flavor with a medium heat spice level.

Sriracha is commonly used on egg and seafood dishes but also used as a condiment for soups, burgers, fries, and stir-fries.

    HEALTHY INGREDIENTS

    Fresh garlic

Low-fat Greek yogurt is my preference, but any plain unsweetened yogurt can be substituted. Note that regular yogurts and plant-based yogurts may have a thinner consistency than Greek yogurts resulting in a thinner aioli.

Lemon juice, fresh squeezed is my preference. But, if you only have bottled lemon juice, that will work just fine.

    Sriracha Sauce

    Honey

HOW CAN I MAKE HOMEMADE SRIRACHA AIOLI?

This recipe is quick, easy, and comes together in less than 5 minutes.

    1. Chop the garlic finely.
    2. Combine all ingredients in a small bowl and stir until well mixed.
    3. Taste and adjust seasonings if needed. Add more sriracha sauce for more heat or more honey if it's too spicy for you. I wouldn't suggest adding more garlic as the garlic flavors will intensify the longer the aioli is in the refrigerator.
    4. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.

WHAT TO EAT WITH SRIRACHA AIOLI

Here are a few recipes that pair well with Sriracha Aioli.

    • Crispy Baked Carrot Fries
    • Loaded Cauliflower
    • Roasted Brussels Sprouts
    • Roasted Sweet Potatoes
    • Easy Sautéed Sweet Potatoes

    SUBSTITUTES FOR YOUR DIETARY PREFERENCES

I love this healthy vegetarian dip as is. But, if your diet calls for dairy-free dips or your preference is to eat vegan there are easy substitutes available. What if you're out of yogurt or prefer mayo? There's substitutes available for that as well.

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

CAN I USE FULL-FAT YOGURT FOR THIS RECIPE?

Sure! Full fat yogurt is slightly thicker, so you may want to add a half tablespoon of water at a time to get your aioli to the desired consistency.

    CAN I USE FAT-FREE YOGURT?

Definitely. If you're on a low-fat diet, this is a great option for your sriracha aioli sauce.

CAN I USE REGULAR YOGURT INSTEAD OF GREEK YOGURT?

You can use regular yogurt instead of Greek yogurt. Regular yogurt is not as thick as Greek yogurt resulting in a thinner aioli.

CAN I USE MAYONNAISE IN THIS DIP?

If you like mayonnaise better than Greek yogurt and it fits your nutritional needs, mayonnaise can be a good substitute.

WHAT CAN I USE INSTEAD OF SRIRACHA SAUCE?

Sriracha sauce has a very distinct flavor, but if you're looking for a spicy aioli and need a quick substitute most hot sauces will work. Keep in mind that hot sauces vary widely in their heat profile. You'll need to add a small about of hot sauce at a time and taste as you go.

CAN I USE DAIRY-FREE YOGURT IN YOGURT DIPS?

You sure can! If you're following a dairy-free or vegan lifestyle, plant-based yogurt is a good substitute. Just be sure to keep the yogurt ratio the same as in the recipe and you should be good to go!

HOW DO I MAKE THIS SRIRACHA DIP VEGAN?

To make this Greek yogurt sriracha dip vegan, you have two options. Use a plant-based plain yogurt, or use a vegan mayo. Just be sure to keep the yogurt ratio the same as in the recipe and you should be good to go!

IS SRIRACHA AIOLI AND BANG BANG SAUCE THE SAME THING?

No. While both are similar, Bang Bang Sauce is made with Thai Sweet Chili sauce, and Sirachac Aioli is made with Sriracha sauce.

    Ingredients

    • 1 cup Low-Fat Greek Yogurt
    • 2 tablespoons sriracha sauce
    • 1.5 teaspoons honey
    • 1 clove garlic finely chopped
    • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
    • salt and pepper to taste

    Instructions

    • Finely chop one clove of garlic
    • In a small bowl, combine Greek yogurt, honey, sriracha sauce, lime juice, garlic, and salt.
    • Taste and adjust seasonings if needed.

    Notes

    Hot, Hot, or Hotter?

If you like a little bit of a spicy kick, but aren't a fan of hot foods, I suggest starting with one tablespoon of Sriracha. Taste and add more if desired. If the aioli is spicer than  you like, you can add more greek yogurt and a bit more honey to mellow it out.
If you like it hotter, by all means add more sriracha!

    HOW TO STORE

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.

It's quite a stretch to call this an aioli, but it looks good!

I am a picky sauce person. Every spicy yogurt or mayo ive made has been meh. This one is amazing. I love that it is made with yogurt and honey as a sweetener. Im not a fan of mayo based anything. Weve paired it with asian lettuce wraps last week and tonight will be with shawarma. Mmmm.

The ingredients list says lemon juice but the instructions say lime juice — I went with lemon and enjoyed it 🙂 but I’d love to know which was the intended citrus! haha

Easy to make. Pretty good add on for flavor, especially since I made it the lazy way with garlic powder.
