    Homemade Tortilla Strips (Healthy)

I love making these homemade tortilla strips for soups and salads. And, if you've never baked your own strips or chips, you're in for a treat! Not only are they healthier, but also perfectly crispy and you get to control the salt.

I've made these with corn tortillas, flour tortillas, and whole wheat tortillas. My preference is using a mixture of regular flour and whole wheat tortillas, but it really boils down to what you like and if you're like me, what you have on hand.

    RECIPE DETAILS

The recipe stays the same for tortilla chips or strips with the exception of the shape you're cutting the tortillas.

    TORTILLA STRIPS

To make homemade tortilla strips, simply use a knife or pizza cutter to quickly cut the tortillas into strips.

    TORTILLA CHIPS

For tortilla chips, they are cut into triangles.

    HEALTHY BAKED GOODNESS

All you need are some tortillas, olive oil, and sea salt or kosher salt. These can be prepped and cooked in under 15 minutes. And, you can absolutely church up the seasoning with your favorite Mexican seasoning.

When making homemade tortilla strips for Chicken Tortilla Soup I prefer to keep the flavors simple.

    Ingredients

    • 4 flour tortillas whole-wheat or corn tortillas work too
    • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
    • salt to taste

    Instructions

    • Preheat oven to 400°F.
    • Lightly brush tortillas with olive oil.
    • Stack all tortillas on top of each other.
For Chips: Using a knife or pizza cutter, cut into quarters. Then each quarter into thirds.
For Strips: Using a knife or pizza cutter, cut into strips.
    • Spread tortillas around on a lightly oiled baking tray. Try not to let them overlap too much.
    • Sprinkle with sea salt or kosher salt and bake for 10-12 minutes, rotating the baking sheet halfway through. When chips are crispy and starting to turn light brown in spots remove them from the oven. Since oven temperatures vary, you'll want to keep an eye on these guys. If they're looking crispy and turning light brown half way through baking go ahead and pull them out of the oven.
    • THe chips will continue to crisp up as they cool.

    Notes

For added flavor, try adding your favorite Mexican spice blend instead of salt.

You know, I have been toasting corn tortillas in the oven for years but never thought to brush them with oil first! I can't wait to make these again using your recipe.
