    Are Green Smoothies Healthy?

Absolutely!...If you make them right. Green smoothie recipes can be a fantastic way to get more nutrition, fiber, and micronutrients into your diet. You’ll want to use natural, whole-food ingredients and steer clear of lots of added fruit juices. Here’s a breakdown of the health benefits of foods you’ll be using in your smoothie.

    RECIPE INGREDIENTS

    KALE

Kale is considered the king of all the leafy greens and is one of the healthiest and most nutritious plant-based foods.  Kale is low in calories, low in fat, and full of vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, Folate, Alpha-linolenic acid (an omega-3 fatty acid), Lutein, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and zinc.

Read this Healthline Article to learn more about the health benefits of Kale.

    SPINACH

Spinach is often called a superfood since it’s loaded with tons of nutrients and antioxidants like Vitamin A, Vitamins B6, Vitamin B9, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin K, Folic acid, Iron, Calcium, Potassium, and Magnesium.

smoothie ingredients on a white background, kale, spinach, banana, lemon, apple, water, orange juice.

    LEMON

Lemons are a great addition to a healthy lifestyle! They are an excellent source of vitamin C and antioxidants.

Antioxidants help remove free radicals that can damage cells from the body. Lemons are also great when paired with foods high in iron (like the spinach in this smoothie) since pairing foods that are high in vitamin C with iron-rich foods increases the body’s ability to absorb iron.

Lemon juice will help your smoothie stay fresh in your refrigerator for 1-2 days.

    APPLE

An apple a day…. Apples are not only delicious but are good for you in so many ways! Apples have a good amount of flavonoids and pectin. Pectin is a fiber that breaks down in your gut.

If you’re juicing or removing the skin of the apple, you won’t get as much of the fiber or flavonoids. The fiber you get from the pectin and flavonoids can slow digestion so you feel fuller after eating.

    BANANA

Bananas are considered one of the most popular fruits. They contain a moderate amount of fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants like Potassium, Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, Magnesium, Copper, and Manganese.

Unripe bananas rank lower on the glycemic index than ripe and overripe bananas. The Glycemic index is a tool used to measure how quickly a food increases blood sugar levels. This is why overripe bananas are preferred for their super sweetness in homemade banana bread recipes'.

    SMOOTHIES FOR TODDLERS AND KIDS

This delicious smoothie recipe might just be the answer to getting more nutrition into your picky eaters!

A lot of parents end up supplementing their child’s diet with sugary store-bought shakes and expensive nutritional supplements. Homemade smoothies are one of the best ways to get healthy clean eating, whole foods into your child's diet!

    SMOOTHIE POPSICLES

A fun activity for kids is to freeze any leftover smoothies into freezer pops! Frozen smoothie pops are a huge hit on hot summer days and one more way to get fruits and veggies into your kiddos.

green smoothie in a glass with a cute puppy in the background.

    SMOOTHIE FREEZER BAGS

Wondering if you can meal prep smoothies for the week? You sure can!

    1. Wash, dry, and chop your fruits and vegetables then portion them out into freezer-friendly containers or bags.
    2. Then, place your bags into the freezer until ready for use.
    3. When you’re ready to make a smoothie, simply take the frozen fruit and veggies out of the bag, add them to your blender, add your ice water and orange juice, and blend. No need to thaw before blending!

Remember to always peel your bananas prior to freezing! This is also a great way to save any fruits that are close to becoming overripe.

    HOW TO MAKE SMOOTHIES THINNER

I've found some smoothies, especially green smoothies, can be thicker than I like. And, my children always prefer their smoothies to be less thick.

There are two options to making smoothies thinner. Add more juice or add more water. Adding additional juices also adds more sugars to your smoothie, so add your juices slowly and taste often.

    PROTEIN GREEN SMOOTHIE

Protein powder is an easy addition to smoothies. For this smoothie, a plain or vanilla flavored protein powder works best. Simply add the recommended serving size, usually 1-2 scoops to the blender, and blend up with the rest of your ingredients.

If meal prepping this smoothie the night before, I recommend waiting until the morning of to add the protein powder. Make smoothie as directed and store it in a blender bottle overnight. When ready to drink, simply add the protein powder, and shake until blended well.

    BEST PROTEIN POWDER FOR SMOOTHIES

Not all protein powders are created equal and there are tons on the market. It can be had to know which one to pick! My recommendation is to look for a clean-food protein powder that meets your dietary needs and tastes good.

I love the tip for adding lemon to help the iron from the spinach absorb more! I’m currently pregnant and just above the levels for being anemic so the more iron, the better. Thanks for sharing!

This sounds delicious. I have always been a fan of smoothies, but I'll be honest... I've never tried green smoothies before. I think I was just skeptical based on the fact that it doesn't look like the fruit-based smoothies that I usually make. However, reading through this recipe I see that they really are just like my fruit-based smoothies but with some extra (nutritious) ingredients. I can't wait to try it out!
