Why You’ll Love This Homemade Hemp Granola
Not only is this homemade hemp hearts granola easy to bake, but it is also incredibly healthy. Hemp hearts are a great source of protein, containing all nine essential amino acids, making it a complete protein source. They are also rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which can help reduce inflammation and improve heart health. Additionally, the oats in the granola provide a great source of fiber, which can help regulate digestion and keep you feeling full.
Finally, homemade hemp hearts granola is incredibly tasty. The combination of sweet honey, crunchy oats, and nutty hemp hearts creates a delicious and satisfying snack that can be enjoyed any time of day. It is the perfect addition to yogurt, smoothie bowls, or just eaten as a snack on its own.
HEMP ADDS PROTEIN TO GRANOLA
Hemp seeds have many health benefits and are considered a complete protein, meaning they contain all 9 amino acids. Traditionally granola recipe’s macronutrients contain carbohydrates and fats only, while hemp granola has an added plant-based protein.
WHAT GOES INTO HEMP GRANOLA?
This healthy hemp granola recipe contains rolled oats, hemp hearts, plenty of pecans, pepitas, and sunflower seeds that are naturally sweetened with maple syrup and a touch of flakey sea salt…yep, this is going to be delicious!
OATS
Oats are a staple in most homemade granola recipes and have are a great addition to your healthy diet. To read more about the health benefits of oats, here’s a good article from The Whole Grain Council.
Oats are naturally gluten-free but are often processed near other gluten-rich grains. Be sure to use certified gluten-free oats if you need gluten-free granola.
HEMP HEARTS
When most people talk about adding hemp seeds to their recipes, they are actually referring to hemp hearts. Hemp hearts are the tender inner part of the hemp seed. So, if youβre eating hemp seeds youβd be eating both the crunchy outer shell seed and the hemp heart.
Hemp hearts are a delicious, slightly nutty-tasting, gluten-free powerhouse of nutrients. And, they are considered a complete source of high-quality protein, have tons of healthy fats (including Omega 6 and Omega 3), and contain high amounts of vitamin E, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfur, calcium, iron, and zinc.
In addition to the nutritional benefits of hemp hearts, some research suggests that hemp seeds may have positive health effects on brain health, heart health, reduced inflammation, and improved skin conditions.
PECANS
Pecans are high in monounsaturated fats which may help improve immune system functioning, reduce inflammation, and potentially reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease.
Homemade granola is truly a choose your adventure type of food. My recipe is usually dictated by what I have available in my panty. If pecans arenβt your favorite or you donβt have any available, just use a different nut or a variety of nuts.
Keep in mind, nuts are very calorie-dense, meaning a few can go a long way.
SEEDS
I used both pepitas and sunflower seeds. Pepitas are a rich source of protein and dietary fiber and also contain minerals like iron, potassium, magnesium, and zinc. Sunflower seeds are most notably a great source of vitamin E and dietary fiber.
Coconut Oil
Granola needs some type of oil to achieve the perfect crunch. I prefer unrefined coconut oil. It’s delicious and produces the perfect texture.
Coconut oil is made up of 90% saturated fat compared to olive oil, which is made up of about 10% saturated fat. The health benefit of coconut oil comes from a medium-chain fatty acid called lauric acid that makes up a substantial amount of the fat in this oil. Lauric acid may have health benefits such as, increasing beneficial high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels that are easily processed in the body.
If coconut oil isnβt your favorite or youβd prefer to keep your saturated fat intake down, you can use extra-virgin olive oil instead.
Maple Syrup
Using a natural sweetener like maple syrup or honey is always my preference over highly processed sugar. Most diets are full of highly processed foods, using a natural sweetener is an easy substitute when baking.
Maple syrup also contains minerals such as Calcium, Potassium, Iron, Zinc, and Manganese.
While using a natural sweetener is a healthier alternative to a highly processed refined sugar, at the end of the day, maple syrup is still sucrose and needs to be eaten in moderation.
Salt & Spice
Donβt skip the salt! It brings all the flavors together and who doesn’t love a sweet and salty combination? I prefer using flakey sea salt in this one. Cinnamon is an obvious choice for spice (and my favorite!) but feel free to change up the flavors with seasonal spices.

Healthy Hemp Hearts Granola
Ingredients
- 3 cups rolled oats
- 1 cup hemp hearts
- 1 cup pecans
- Β½ cup pepitas
- Β½ cup sunflower seeds
- ΒΌ cup coconut oil melted
- Β½ cup maple syrup
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- Β½ teaspoon sea salt (flakey sea salt if available)
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350Β°F. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. Pro Tip: Wet parchment paper then wring out water. Doing this will prevent parchment paper from rolling up on the baking sheet.
- In a large bowl combine oats, hemp hearts, pecans, pepitas, and sunflower seeds.
- Pour coconut oil, maple syrup, vanilla, and cinnamon over granola mixture and stir to coat oat mixture.
- Transfer the hemp granola to the prepared baking sheet and spread it into an even layer. Use a spatula to press granola evenly into the pan and sprinkle with flakey sea salt.
- Bake for 30 minutes, stirring halfway through.Β The granola is ready when golden-brown and the pecans have toasted β it will still feel slightly wet coming out of the oven but will dry as it cools.
- Let the granola cool undisturbed before storing it in an airtight container. Dried fruit, chocolate chips, or unsweetened coconut can be added if desired after granola has cooled.

This is delicious. But I found it didn’t brown in only 30 min. I had to bake an additional 30, stirring every 15 min. Is it suppose to be like museli texture, moist and white, or browner, dry and crunchy like other granolas. It was delicious if I over baked it. Lol
Jessica says
