Smoothie Ingredients
MANGO – You could use fresh mangos for this recipe, but I’m a big fan of using frozen fruit in my smoothies. Using frozen fruit saves time and saves money when fresh fruit isn’t in season. If you can’t find fresh or frozen mangos, feel free to substitute peaches, pineapples, or oranges.
SPINACH – Sweet and tender baby spinach leaves are used in this smoothie. Packed with iron and containing more fiber, Vitamin A, and protein than Kale; this mango spinach smoothie is a great way to kickstart your day!
BANANA – Fresh or frozen bananas will work! Don’t like bananas? Try adding half an avocado or ½ cup of plain or vanilla yogurt to your smoothie.
LEMON - Freshly squeezed lemon juice brings a brightness to this smoothie and helps your body absorb iron nutrients from the spinach. If you don’t have fresh lemons on hand, I suggest omitting this ingredient before using bottled lemon juice.
OAT MILK – Oat milk gives this smoothie a creamy texture and provides a little extra fiber. If you’re not a fan of oat milk, you could use almond milk, coconut milk, soy milk, or regular dairy milk.
ICE WATER - For extra hydration without extra calories, I like to add ice water to my smoothies.
HOW TO MAKE
- Peel banana
- Place banana, frozen mango, generous amounts of spinach, oat milk, ice water, and lemon juice in a blender.
- Blend on high speed until the smoothie is creamy and smooth, about 1- 1 ½ minutes.
SUBSTITUTIONS
- Oat Milk - Feel free to use any plant-based milk (or dairy) of your choice. Almond milk, soy milk, and coconut milk work well with the mango flavor.
- Mango Spinach Smoothie Without Banana - If you’d like to omit the banana but still enjoy a creamy smoothie, I suggest replacing the banana with ½ of an avocado or a ½ cup of plain or vanilla yogurt.
- Frozen Fruit - Can’t find frozen mango? Fresh will work just fine! Or, swap out frozen mango for frozen peaches or frozen pineapple.
Smoothie Add-Ins
This mango spinach smoothie is pretty perfect as is, but if you’re feeling a little extra here are some additional options to toss in the blender!
- 1-2 tablespoons of hemp seeds
- This is a mango spinach smoothie without yogurt, but you could add a ¼-½ cup of plain or vanilla-flavored yogurt (regular or Greek).
- For even more tropical flavor add-in ½ cup of fresh or frozen pineapple
- ¼ cup of shredded coconut would not only taste great but add a bit more fat to your smoothie

Easy Meal Prep/Make-Ahead Smoothie Tips
If your mornings are as busy as mine, you can easily make this smoothie the night before and enjoy a quick grab-and-go smoothie on your way out the door!
- Smoothie Storage - This smoothie can be stored in an airtight jar in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours as long as the lemon juice has been added.
- Freezer Storage - Smoothies can be frozen for up to three months. After blending your smoothie ingredients, pour them into airtight freezer-friendly containers and freeze. To thaw, take your frozen drink out of the freezer the night before and let it thaw in the refrigerator overnight.
How To Add Protein Powder To This Smoothie
For a macronutrient balanced smoothie, I love to add whey protein powder, collagen protein powder, or plant-based protein powder. For this smoothie, a plain or vanilla flavored protein powder works best. Simply add the recommended serving size, usually 1-2 scoops to the blender, and blend up with the rest of your ingredients.
Always talk with your doctor before starting any supplements, and I don’t suggest giving protein powder to children unless their doctor has recommended it.
Smoothies are a great addition to weight loss diets because they are full of healthy ingredients, nutrients, and promote hydration, but not all smoothies are made equal. Many smoothies are very calorie dense and can have as many calories as a milkshake. Pay attention to nutritional labels and stay clear of smoothies that have lots of add fruit juices.
If you like your smoothies super creamy and thick like a milkshake, but need a dairy-free option consider adding a frozen banana, ½ an avocado, ½ cup plant-based yogurt, or ¼ cup of oats to your smoothie.
