Made with Oat milk, honey (or maple syrup), unsweetened cocoa powder, vanilla, and just a pinch of salt this is a homemade hot chocolate you can feel good about! All-natural ingredients with no processed sugars are the healthy cup of hot chocolate you’ve been looking for.
INGREDIENTS
- Unsweetened oat milk - I use oat milk because it’s what I keep on hand, but feel free to use any milk you like. Dairy milk, almond milk, and soy milk will all work here
- Unsweetened cocoa powder or raw cacao powder
- Oat flour - Oat milk lacks the fat content of dairy products. Using oat flour helps slightly thicken and helps hot chocolate to have a velvety, creamy consistency. Oat flour is simply whole oats that have been ground in a blender or food processor to make fine flour. It’s easy to make and keep on hand and becoming more widely available in grocery stores.
- Honey or maple syrup (plus more to taste if needed)
- Pure vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
INSTRUCTIONS
Warm the oat milk on the stove over medium-low heat until hot but not boiling. Simmer for 5 minutes.
Combine cocoa powder, honey, and salt with 2 tablespoons of warm oat milk to make a hot chocolate slurry. Mix until there are no lumps in your cocoa powder.
Add the hot cocoa slurry to the warm oat milk, and mix well.
Simmer on low for 3-5 minutes more until your hot chocolate is slightly thickened and creamy.
Stir in the vanilla extract
Pour into two hot cocoa mugs and serve with toppings of your choice.

OAT MILK
I find that oat milk makes the creamiest dairy-free hot chocolate, but feel free to use any milk you like. Almond milk and soy milk will both work here. If you eat dairy products, cow’s milk can be used for a traditional hot chocolate recipe.
HONEY
Honey really compliments the chocolate cocoa in this recipe. Maple syrup or agave syrup is also a great sweetener in oaty hot chocolate.
OAT FLOUR
If you don’t have oat flour on hand, regular white flour or ½ teaspoon of cornstarch can be used.
COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS
IS COCOA POWDER DAIRY-FREE?
Sometimes a cocoa powder container will say “contains trace amounts of dairy”. While the cocoa powder is naturally dairy-free, it may be processed around other products or use the same processing equipment as other dairy products. Look for cocoa powders that have a dairy-free label on the packaging.

Are you using homemade oatmilk with oats and water?
Jessica says
Hi Liz, I normally use a store bought oat milk. I'm a big fan of Chobani Extra Creamy, Oat-ly, and Simple Truth Organic. If you need free, make sure the label states its certified GF. I hope this helps, please let me know if you have any more questions. You can always reach me at [email protected]!
