Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups unsweetened oat milk
  • 2 ½ tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder or raw cacao powder
  • 1 teaspoon oat flour optional, but provides a creamier hot cocoa
  • 2 tablespoons honey or maple or agave syrup.
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Warm the oat milk on the stove over medium-low heat until hot but not boiling. Simmer for 5 minutes.
  • Combine cocoa powder, oat flour, honey, and salt with 2 tablespoons of the warmed oat milk to make a hot chocolate slurry. Mix until there are no lumps in your cocoa powder. This step prevents any lumps of hot cocoa in your hot chocolate.
  • Add the hot cocoa slurry to the warm oat milk, and mix well.
  • Simmer on low for 3-5 minutes more until your hot chocolate is slightly thickened and creamy.
  • Stir in the vanilla extract
  • Pour into two hot cocoa mugs and serve with toppings of your choice.

HOW TO MAKE HOT CHOCOLATE FOR A CROWD

This easy-to-make oat milk hot chocolate recipe is made for two cups, but feel free to double or triple the recipe as needed. Keep your hot cocoa warm, on low heat, on the stovetop during a party. Stir occasionally to prevent scorching the bottom of the pan. Or, keep your hot chocolate warm in a slow cooker over low heat until you are ready to serve it.

SUBSTITUTIONS

OAT MILK

I find that oat milk makes the creamiest dairy-free hot chocolate, but feel free to use any milk you like. Almond milk and soy milk will both work here. If you eat dairy products, cow’s milk can be used for a traditional hot chocolate recipe.

HONEY

Honey really compliments the chocolate cocoa in this recipe. Maple syrup or agave syrup is also a great sweetener in oaty hot chocolate.

OAT FLOUR

If you don’t have oat flour on hand, regular white flour or ½ teaspoon of cornstarch can be used.
