OAT MILK SMOOTHIES
When it comes to smoothies, oat milk has become my go-to plant-based option for adding a mild creaminess that is as similar to milk as you can get, in my opinion. Oat milk has worked great in every smoothie I’ve made and is the perfect dairy-free option for anyone who’s cutting back on their dairy consumption.
HEALTHY INGREDIENTS
- Navel orange
- Banana - fresh or frozen
- Oat milk
- Medjool date (pitted)
- Pure Vanilla extract
- Ice Cubes
HOW TO MAKE
Peel orange and banana
Place orange, banana, oat milk, ice cubes, vanilla extract, and dates in a high-powered blender.
Blend on high speed until the smoothie is creamy and smooth
Enjoy! This recipe makes two 8 ounce smoothies or one large 16-ounce smoothie.
FOR A CREAMIER SMOOTHIE
If you like your smoothies super creamy and thick like a milkshake, consider adding one of these to your next oat milk smoothie.
- 1 cup of plain or vanilla yogurt - plant-based, Greek, or regular dairy yogurt
- 1 avocado
- ¼ cup gluten-free rolled (old-fashioned) oats
SUBSTITUTIONS
Oat Milk - Feel free to use any plant-based milk (or dairy) of your choice. Almond milk, soy milk, and coconut milk all work well with the flavors of orange and banana.
Dates - I highly recommend using dates for added sweetness and fiber. That being said, if you don’t like dates, you could use 1-2 tablespoons of honey or maple syrup.
Orange - Feel free to sub pineapple for oranges in this smoothie!
OPTIONAL ADD-INS
- Hemp Seeds
- Protein Powders
- Yogurt
- Strawberries
- Oats
- Pineapple
- Peaches
HOW TO STORE
This smoothie will keep in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. I suggest freezing your smoothie if you need to store it for longer.
CAN I ADD PROTEIN POWDER TO MY SMOOTHIE?
For a macronutrient balanced smoothie, I love to add whey protein powder, collagen protein powder, or plant-based protein powder.
For this orange banana smoothie, a plain or vanilla flavored protein powder works best. Simply add the recommended serving size, usually 1-2 scoops to the blender, and blend up with the rest of your ingredients.
If I’m not drinking my smoothie right away, I like to wait to add the protein powder until I’m ready to enjoy it.
